'Dreams of billions came true that day.' Sachin Tendulkar, Yuvraj & others remember the sweet victory of 2011 CWC on its 11th anniversary

Eleven years ago, on this very date, Indian cricketers created history on the field of Wankhede stadium. The team tasted a spectacular victory at the World Cup – 28 years after their maiden win– and took home the winning trophy, defeating Sri Lanka by six wickets.

As eleven years have rolled by, that triumph has only become sweeter for every cricket fan and player. Today, several cricket stalwarts took to social media to remember the joyous moment which made India immensely proud of its men in blue.

For Tendulkar, the victory was even more momentous because winning the world cup had been his childhood dream. The dream had its inception when he first watched the Indian cricket team bring home the trophy in 1983. However, despite his best efforts, the cricketer had five unsuccessful attempts, and 2011 was his last chance at the coveted trophy.


Remembering the historic day, Tendulkar today posted a photo of himself standing between two wall hung photos – one showing the 1983 win, and the other depicting the 2011 one. In his caption the master blaster wrote, " How the dream started and how it was accomplished."
Yuvraj Singh, who played a spectacular series and propelled India to a win in 2011 also recalled the victory today. Sharing several photos of the win, Singh wrote on Twitter, “It wasn’t just a world cup victory, it was the dream of a billion Indians being fulfilled. Proud to be a part of this team that wanted to win the cup for the country & for @sachin_rt.Nothing can match the pride of wearing the tricolour & bringing glory to the nation.”
In a tweet Harbhajan Singh revealed that it was a day ‘when billions jumped with joy’ and confessed that he relives the celebration of that day ‘over and over again’.
IPL’s official handle also took a trip down the memory lane and shared a video of Dhoni and Gautam Gambhir from that eventful day.
BCCI shared a photo of the winning team with the caption, “Etched in our memory forever’.
