Benedict Cumberbatch has gone viral online after getting involved in a heated argument with a cyclist on a London street. The actor, best known for playing Doctor Strange in the Marvel films and Sherlock Holmes in the BBC series Sherlock, was seen in a video exchanging sharp words with a masked cyclist over what appeared to be an alleged traffic violation involving bicycles and road rules.

The clip, first shared by The Sun and later picked up by multiple international outlets, shows the actor standing beside a bike lane near King’s Cross in central London. The undated video is said to be recent. In the footage, both men can be heard arguing while pedestrians and bystanders watched the exchange unfold.

What happened in the viral video

According to reports, the cyclist accused Cumberbatch of breaking traffic rules while riding his bicycle. The masked man can be heard telling the actor, “You’re deluded, you’re lying. I was behind you the entire time.”


Cumberbatch responded by saying, “Dude, you verbally abused me.”

The cyclist then continued accusing the actor of ignoring road rules, saying, “You went through a zebra crossing, you went through three lights.”

At another point in the exchange, the cyclist said, “Oh no, I verbally abused the guy who completely repeatedly broke the law,” after the actor objected to the way he was being spoken to.

Cumberbatch appeared to partly acknowledge one allegation during the argument and replied, “I did it once,” though it was not fully clear what exactly he was referring to in the clip.

Reports said the confrontation lasted close to 10 minutes before both men eventually left the area. No police complaint or formal charges have been reported so far in connection with the incident.

Bystanders react to the roadside clash

People who witnessed the incident also spoke about the atmosphere during the argument. One onlooker quoted by media outlets said the situation felt “crazy” and almost looked staged because of how dramatic the exchange became in public.

Another witness claimed that despite being visibly irritated during the confrontation, Cumberbatch still interacted politely with fans nearby. Some schoolchildren reportedly recognised him as Doctor Strange and asked for photographs while the argument was still going on.

According to eyewitness accounts, the actor responded by saying, “Not at the moment, in a minute,” before later taking pictures with fans after the cyclist had left.

The video has now spread widely across social media platforms, with many users debating who was at fault in the exchange. Some defended the actor, while others focused on the alleged traffic violations mentioned during the argument.
