Dr. D's column: Why the problems with Moody's ratings
Dear Dr D,

I have so many questions. Where to begin? Perhaps we should just dive right into it. Here goes: What is this CPM? There are communists still on the planet? I thought they became extinct 25 years ago everywhere else, how have they survived in India? And is it true that there is also a CPI and a CPI-ML? Astonishing.

Second, what is their problem with my name (i.e., Moody)? Do they think it’s representative of emotional swings? To continue with my education: why is the Indian species from Calcutta so prone to extreme and strong emotion? It’s a wonder.

Third, why do they think I have been rating the Indian economy and/or government? I am a cricketer. I can do bowling ratings, I can do batting ones and I can calculate run rates. But GDP and fiscal deficit and such are not my domain. Why am I being abused (in bad English) for doing absolutely nothing? Fourth, why do so many of you shoot first and aim later? It’s very off-putting.

Dear Mr Moody,

I also have a few things to put across. First, that we have our names mangled far too often. Many seem to find it impossible to say ‘Sivaramakrishnan’ and ‘Vengsarkar’. It’s all right if once in a while we confuse you with something else.

Second, I notice that your name is from the Old English Modig and it means ‘brave’. So live up to it and man up.
