According to Filmi Beat, Dorothy is reportedly scheduled to start streaming on Netflix on October 23, 2026. However, Netflix and the makers are yet to officially confirm the reported streaming date.This means October 23 should currently be treated as the reported OTT release date, rather than a confirmed one. If the date gets confirmed, the film will arrive on the streaming platform less than a month after its theatrical release.
What is Dorothy about?
Written and directed by Karthik Subbaraj, Dorothy is set in the 1980s and centres on childhood friends Karthi and Subbu. The two grow up together under the influence of Subbu's powerful family, but their lives begin to take different directions as they become adults.The arrival of Dorothy, played by Keerthy Suresh, changes the equation between the friends. Her closeness to Subbu brings tensions within the family and sets off a series of events that force the characters to confront questions of identity, relationships and belonging. Actors Sananth and Rishikanth play the main roles alongside Keerthy Suresh.
Karthik Subbaraj on Dorothy’s queer themes
Dorothy has also led to discourse over its portrayal of queer and transgender issues. The film has to face criticism and online backlash, which included a controversy because a same-sex kiss scene got leaked before its release.Karthik Subbaraj has previously spoken about wanting to portray the community with dignity rather than relying on stereotypical representations. In an interview with Hyderabad Times, he said the film had made some men reflect on how they had treated transgender people in the past.
He also said he hoped the film would encourage audiences to treat transgender people with dignity and accept them as an integral part of society.
Karthik Subbaraj has written and directed Dorothy, with additional screenplay credited to Saravanan Chandran. Jyoti Deshpande, Guneet Monga Kapoor and Achin Jain have produced the film.
