One simple housekeeping secret can make curtain cleaning at home easier: vacuum the curtains before washing them.

Why you should vacuum curtains before washing

Curtains can trap a surprising amount of loose dust in their folds, pleats and hems. If you immediately put dusty curtains into the washing machine, the accumulated dirt can mix with water and spread across the fabric. Vacuuming first removes much of this loose debris and makes the washing process more effective. It is particularly useful for curtains that have not been cleaned for several months.

How to vacuum curtains properly

Start by checking the curtain's care label. If the fabric is suitable for vacuuming, use your vacuum cleaner's upholstery or soft-brush attachment. Close the curtains fully and work from the top towards the bottom. Move slowly over the fabric, paying extra attention to pleats, folds and the bottom edge where dust tends to collect.
