Domino's offers free pizza to Mirabai Chanu for her silver win at Olympics, Twitter calls it 'brand promotion'

Entire nation went into celebration mode after Saikhom Mirabai Chanu scored India's first medal at the Tokyo Olympics 2020 by bagging silver in the Women's 49kg category. During one of her interviews post victory, the medalist said that she wished to eat pizza after her win, a statement that did not go unnoticed by Domino's Pizza, who pledged to provide free pizza to Chanu for life.

Not only that, but the food chain also reached Chanu's doorstep in Imphal to deliver pizzas to her family to celebrate her big win at the Games. The company shared couple of pictures on their official Twitter account which showed the Domino's Pizza employees handing over pizza boxes to the athlete's family.

"We are elated that we could share this wonderful moment with @mirabai_chanu’s loved ones," Domino's Pizza tweeted.



On Saturday when reporters asked Chanu what she was going to do after her silver win at the Tokyo Olympics, she had replied saying: "First of all, I will go and have a pizza. It has been a long time since I ate it. I will eat a lot today.”

Soon enough a short video clip with Chanu's quote went viral on Twitter, where people tagged Pratik Potathe, CEO and Wholetime Director of Jubilant FoodWorks Ltd (JFL) that operates Domino's Pizza in India, urging him to deliver pizza to the athlete for life.

Pota quickly joined the conversation and confirmed that the wish was granted as that was the least they could do for the athlete for brining in so much pride for the country by her feat. "Done! That's the least we can do for someone who has brought so much honour for the country! #MirabaiChanu,” he said on Twitter. Three hours later, Pota shared photos on twitter of Domino's team in Imphal delivering pizzas to her family.

While many applauded and cheered the food chain brand for its sweet gesture, there were also a few who slammed Domino's Pizza and accused it for promoting their brand. "It would be a WIN WIN situation, neither as an athlete she will have pizza for lifetime... and undoubtedly it also helps you to enhance your brand equity too," a user wrote.
