Doctors once told Pamela Anderson that she would live for only some more years, with cure rate of just 10%. ‘Took everything I had…'
Pamela Anderson recently reminisced about one of the most troubling periods in her life, when she was diagnosed with hepatitis C in the late 1990s. During that era, it was considered incurable. The Baywatch star admitted that her life was turned ‘...

The actress said that the diagnosis filled her with terror – not for her impending death, but for what would happen to her children in her absence. Before 1990, HCV (hepatitis C virus) was an incurable, chronic infection with a cure rate of only 10% with early interferon monotherapy, as per a 2012 article published in the National Library of Medicine. According to IFPMA, in the first-ever HCV treatment approved in 1991, the patient had cure rates of only 6%. According to a 2019 article published in the National Library of Medicine, before 2011, the primary treatment for HCV infection was interferon-based medications, which produced sustained virologic response (SVR, or cure) rates of roughly 45% to 50%. SVR rates increased to roughly 50% to 75% in treatment-naive patients with genotype (GT) 1 infection after first-generation direct-antiviral drugs (DAA) were introduced and given with ribavirin and pegylated interferon.
An article in Variety, which cited the speech, revealed that by 2015, Anderson was “Hep C free", but it took everything she had in her bank. The actress said her brush with the once incurable disease helped her infuse enthusiasm and determination into her career, and she has since appeared in several critically acclaimed movies such as The Last Showgirl, The Naked Gun, etc. According to Entertainment Weekly, the actress received a Best Actress nomination at the 2025 Golden Globes for her performance as Shelly, an elderly dancer who receives the news that her long-running theatrical show would be closed due to low ticket sales.

What Is Hepatitis C?
According to the Mayo Clinic, hepatitis C is a viral infection that causes the liver to swell due to extreme inflammation. The hepatitis C virus (HCV) spreads when an individual is exposed to blood that is infected with the virus. New antiviral medicines can treat people who have chronic hepatitis C infection. However, this is an insidious disease, and many people who have it are not aware, as symptoms can take decades to manifest. Here are some red flags to watch out for:Every long-term hepatitis C infection starts with an acute phase. During this phase, patients may experience jaundice, nausea, fever, fatigue, and muscle pain. Those who are living with chronic hepatitis C or long-term infection often do not experience symptoms until the liver has been damaged. Such symptoms, when they do appear, can include:
- Bleeding profusely and easily.
- Bruising easily.
- Lack of appetite.
- Fatigue.
- Jaundice, which causes the skin and whites of the eyes to appear yellow.
- Dark-coloured urine.
- Itchy skin.
- Fluid in the stomach, which causes it to bloat.
- Swelling in the limbs.
- Weight loss.
- Blood vessels resembling spiders appearing on the skin – these are known as spider angiomas.
