For Dr Tanmay Motiwala, a paediatric surgeon based in Chhattisgarh, the most unforgettable wedding gift didn’t come wrapped in gold or glitter. It arrived quietly in a package, sent with love by someone who couldn’t attend the ceremony — a little girl who once fought cancer under his care.

The heartwarming story has gone viral on social media after Dr Motiwala shared a post on X (formerly Twitter) expressing gratitude for a set of handmade gifts he received from Khushi, a child he treated years ago. “My heart is full. Had happy tears today,” he wrote. “I received a package from Khushi. A surprise that touched me deeply.”

Khushi, a cancer survivor who couldn’t make it to the doctor’s wedding, chose to celebrate him in her own way — through creativity, thoughtfulness and friendship. In the post, Motiwala wrote, “Yes, Khushi is my patient but more than that, she’s a dear friend. A brave cancer survivor. A child who has taught me more about life than most ever could.”

A bond beyond medicine

Their friendship didn’t begin with smiles. Dr Motiwala first met Khushi — affectionately called "Pari" — when she was a stubborn and withdrawn five-year-old battling a chest wall tumour. In an earlier thread from 2022, the doctor recalled his struggles to get her to talk. “I sat there for an hour trying to joke around, show cartoons, tickle her. Nothing worked,” he wrote.

But persistence paid off. As her chemotherapy progressed, so did their friendship. Khushi began holding his finger during evening hospital rounds and borrowing his earphones to listen to music. She even developed her own sense of humour, nicknaming him "DONKEY" after a playful spelling lesson went awry — a joke both of them shared and laughed over for years.

When healing goes both ways

Dr Motiwala’s thread, now being widely appreciated, offers a rare and emotional look at the relationship between doctor and patient — one that goes far beyond tests, prescriptions, and procedures. “She taught me the art to fight in life and never to let that smile down, come whatever,” he wrote. “She also taught me that doctor-patient bond is much beyond those tests, surgeries and bills.”

One incident in particular stood out: when chemotherapy caused tissue damage in Khushi’s hand, putting her limb at risk. Dr Motiwala and his team rushed to get an antidote and managed to save her hand. To encourage her recovery and physiotherapy, he even turned sessions into playful boxing matches, motivating her to move again.

From patient to lifelong friend

Khushi’s progress after surgery was marked by joy, laughter, and continued friendship. Whether it was calling the hospital to ask a junior doctor for a quicker discharge, or phoning Motiwala on his birthday to demand cake, she became a part of his life long after treatment ended.

“I still meet her sometimes at the OPD,” he wrote in the original thread. “We talk like old friends.” That enduring connection is what made her wedding gift so meaningful — a reminder that sometimes the most profound relationships begin in the most difficult moments.

In a world often filled with transactional interactions, their story is a rare testimony to the emotional core of caregiving, and the powerful ways children can inspire even those who are meant to heal them.

And sometimes, as this doctor learned, the greatest gifts don’t come in shiny boxes — they come in the form of love, laughter, and a child’s handmade surprise that simply says, “Thank you.”
