Visiting beaches is incomplete without bringing back seashells, isn’t it? Found in a variety of shapes, sizes, colours and patterns, they are the ultimate, free souvenirs from Mother Nature. If you also love collecting seashells on your beach outings, actor R Madhavan has a warning for you. The Dhurandhar star is not new to sharing interesting stories, quirky updates, and fun facts on his Instagram handle that delight and intrigue fans alike. Now, the 56-year-old has dropped another insightful post on the platform, urging everyone to be wary of picking up cone snails as their stings can be venomous.

Actor Madhavan on the dangers of cone snails

The video opened to a voiceover explaining the hidden dangers behind these seemingly harmless ocean treasures. While the cone snail looks like the perfect beach souvenir due to its smooth texture and intricately patterned shell, it hides a lethal secret that unsuspecting tourists overlook every year.

The moment the creature inside senses the warmth of a human hand, it deploys a highly sophisticated biological weapon. From its mouth, the snail extends a tiny, hollow harpoon—essentially a modified single tooth shaped exactly like a hypodermic needle.

This predatory mechanism fires at a speed faster than the human eye can track, instantly injecting a devastating cocktail of more than 100 different toxins. The venom is so potent that it paralyzes the victim's nervous system within a matter of seconds. Compounding the danger is the terrifying medical reality: there is absolutely no known antivenom available to reverse the effects.

Even after the creature inside has died, the danger of handling these shells does not fade. A discarded or empty-looking cone snail shell remains a serious hazard because its venom delivery apparatus functions like a loaded, biological weapon that doesn't simply deactivate upon death, as per a report by Discover Wildlife

Deep within the shell lies a specialized, harpoon-like tooth that essentially turns into a natural booby trap. Because this sharp structure stays intact, any pressure, squeezing, or rough handling can trigger a mechanical release. If it punctures the skin, it can still inject a leftover—yet still highly lethal—dose of paralyzing neurotoxins.
