The box office saw a quiet yet interesting clash on February 20, as Do Deewane Seher Mein and Assi opened in theatres on the same day. While both films opened to modest numbers, the romantic drama led by Mrunal Thakur and Siddhant Chaturvedi edged ahead of Taapsee Pannu’s socially driven film on Day 1.

Assi vs Do Deewane Seher Mein box office collection day-wise

According to early estimates reported by Sacnilk, Do Deewane Seher Mein earned approximately Rs 1.25 crore net in India on its opening day. The film recorded an overall Hindi occupancy of 9.29%. Morning shows began on a slow note with 5.77% occupancy, which slightly improved in the afternoon at 8.48%. Evening shows stood at 7.94%, while night shows saw relatively better footfall at 14.96%.

Directed by Ravi Udyawar, the film explores the lives of two socially awkward millennials trying to find connection and self-acceptance in Mumbai. With its slice-of-life storytelling and urban setting, the film appears to be targeting multiplex audiences in metro cities. Though the opening numbers are not massive, the film has managed to take a slight lead in this box office face-off. Trade observers believe that positive word-of-mouth over the weekend will be crucial for its growth.

On the other hand, Assi opened at around Rs 1 crore net in India on Friday, also reflecting a restrained start. The occupancy figures remained on the lower side through most of the day, with 3.88% in the morning, 7.24% in the afternoon, and 6.92% in the evening. Interestingly, the film performed better in Chennai, where occupancy touched nearly 20%.

Directed by Anubhav Sinha, Assi tackles a hard-hitting subject. The title refers to the reported statistic of 80 rape cases being filed daily in India. Speaking to PTI about the significance of the number, the director explained that the figure represents only the cases officially recorded every day, while many incidents go unreported. He said that when they calculated the frequency, they realised that such crimes occur roughly every 18 to 20 minutes. He added that even during the course of a brief conversation, another woman could become a victim, a reality he described as deeply disturbing.

Assi also marks the third collaboration between Taapsee and Sinha after Thappad and Mulk, both of which received critical acclaim.

In comparison, Yami Gautam’s Haq, which was released in November 2025, had opened at Rs 1.75 crore and eventually collected Rs 19.86 crore in its lifetime run.

For now, both Do Deewane Seher Mein and Assi will depend heavily on weekend momentum and audience response to determine their long-term box office fate. Stay tuned!
