Tips to invite prosperity and positive energy into your home
If you are getting your home ready for Diwali 2026, here are five ways to make your space more welcoming and festive.
1. Start with a thorough cleaning and decluttering
One of the most important Diwali traditions is cleaning the house. According to traditional Indian practices, clutter and neglected places are associated with stagnant energy, so it’s a good habit to organise the home before the festival.Don’t forget to pay special attention to storage spaces, balconies, kitchens and corners that are often missed during daily cleaning. Dispose of broken or unusable items, clean the cupboards and clear unnecessary items.
The main entrance needs special attention. According to the traditional beliefs, Goddess Lakshmi enters the homes through the entrance, so it is important to keep the doorway clean, accessible and well-maintained.
2. Decorate the entrance with rangoli and flowers
The front door can make or break the whole festive atmosphere. In Vastu, a clean, well-lit entrance decorated with a traditional toran, fresh flowers and rangoli is considered auspicious.Typically, Rangoli designs made with coloured powders, rice flour or flower petals are associated with welcoming good fortune. The entrance and prayer area can also be decorated with marigolds and other fresh flowers.
Do not overcrowd the entrance with shoes, storage boxes or decorative objects that hinder the movement.
3. Light diyas in the right places
Lighting diyas is a huge part of the Diwali celebrations and signifies the victory of light over darkness. Vastu traditions also attach importance to where lamps are placed inside the home.According to traditional guidelines, the north and east directions are considered favourable for lighting diyas. The prayer room is another important place to begin the lighting ritual, particularly during Lakshmi Puja.
Some Vastu practices recommend avoiding the south direction for this purpose. Families can follow the arrangements prescribed by their customary religious traditions.
Place diyas on stable, heat-resistant surfaces and keep them away from curtains, paper decorations and other flammable materials.
4. Bring auspicious plants into your home
Plants can add freshness and a natural festive touch to balconies, living rooms and other parts of the house. Some plants are also considered auspicious in traditional Vastu practices. These include tulsi, money plant and rose among others.Choose plants that suit your home's available space and make sure that they receive appropriate care.
5. Prepare a peaceful prayer space and brighten dark corners
The prayer area becomes particularly important during Diwali because of Lakshmi-Ganesh Puja. Traditional Vastu guidelines associate the northeast corner, also known as the Ishan corner, with spirituality and worship.Keep a clean mandir in this direction if the layout permits. Otherwise, choose another quiet and suitable area for prayer. Clean the idols and photographs, arrange the puja items and ensure good lighting in the space.
Also pay attention to dark corners in the living room, kitchen and balconies. Warm-white lights, lanterns and decorative LED strings can be used to brighten these spaces creating a welcoming feel.
