Keeping this in mind, Denmark recently introduced a mandatory ‘Cooperation after Divorce’ course for parents seeking a divorce. Taken via an app, the 30-minute course helps parents consider what divorce looks like from a child’s perspective and offers them ready guidelines on how they should communicate with each other during and after the divorce period. The course is to be taken during a three-month period of reflection where parents consider the key issues.

Try reaching out to your partner for help. The conversation might be uncomfortable, but it’s worth a try before you throw your marriage away. 1. Is divorce the only route? While divorce is a personal decision and only you can know what’s right for you, it’s important to take into account all the issues that have led or contributed to the end of your marriage. Is your marriage stressed by financial problems, another partner, health issues, unemployment, infertility or death of a loved one? When a marriage is under extreme stress by outside factors, anything can be a trigger. Sometimes, phases like the ‘empty nest syndrome’, the ‘seven year itch’ or a mid-life crisis may compound your relationship problems. Take time out to address these issues. It will help you view your marriage with a clearer perspective.
2. Have I done enough? There’s a huge difference between an unhappy marriage and an unsalvageable one. Consider meeting a couples’ therapist before a lawyer. If you don’t make any progress there, try another therapist before taking a final step. Sometimes, a different approach might work.

Are your standards too high? Have you acknowledged the role you’ve played? Were you unwilling to speak up or did you dismiss your partner? 3. Is sex the problem? A lot of marriages dissolve from a lack of intimacy or an unhealthy sex life. First try reaching out to your partner for help. The conversation might be uncomfortable, but it’s worth a try before you throw your marriage away. Talk to them about what’s good, what’s problematic and be open to feedback. If there’s even a spark left, it’s worth asking yourself, “Can I re-ignite it?”
4. Is there someone else? Affairs, flirtations, micro cheating or online romances are other uncomfortable grey areas. Most affairs don’t last, but few couples move past it. Yet deciding whether or not to give your marriage a second chance is a personal choice. Should you decide to, be prepared to really work on your issues.
