Madhuri Dixit, a leading actress in the '90s, initially hesitated to work with Govinda due to his newcomer status, influenced by her manager Rikku Rakesh Nath. Producer Pahlaj Nihalani revealed that this led to Neelam Kothari being cast in 'Ilzaam...

Not beating around the bush, the producer revealed the ‘Hum Aapke Hain Kaun’ star refused to work with Govinda as he was a newcomer. He clarified that this decision was not entirely Madhuri’s own but was influenced by her longtime manager, Rikku Rakesh Nath.
Alleged Career Roadblocks
According to Nihalani’s account to Pinkvilla, Rikku Rakesh Nath played a significant role in shaping Dixit’s career choices. The producer even alleged that Rikku conspired with a group of eight to ten filmmakers to stall Govinda’s progress in the industry. Nihalani recalled that he personally introduced Govinda to Rikku and had originally planned to pair Madhuri with Govinda. However, when resistance came from Madhuri’s camp, the producer found himself having to make changes. The ‘Ilzaam’ Turning Point
Nihalani hinted during the Pinkvilla interview that the project in question was Ilzaam. Since Madhuri refused to take part, citing her hesitation about acting with a fresh face, the producer cast Neelam Kothari instead. The film turned into a breakthrough success, establishing Govinda as a rising star and also making Neelam an overnight sensation. Replacements and Rivalries
Reflecting on this phase, Nihalani mentioned to Pinkvilla that he continued replacing Madhuri with Neelam in subsequent ventures. He first offered Aag Hi Aag to Madhuri, but after delays and excuses from her team, Neelam was again cast. "I got angry that Madhuri is refusing whatever films I bring to her, and Rikku kept making excuses..." he said.
Later, he repeated this choice with Paap Ki Duniya. Nihalani emphasized that while his films with Neelam thrived commercially, many of Madhuri’s projects during that period either shut down during production or failed at the box office.
Later Collaborations
Despite the initial reluctance, time eventually brought Madhuri Dixit and Govinda together. As noted by Nihalani in his chat with Pinkvilla, the two went on to share the screen in films like Maha Sangram, Izzatdaar, and Paap Ka Ant, marking a new chapter in their professional relationship.Ironically, in an interview with Bollywood Bubble, the 'Raja Babu' actor named Madhuri as one of his favourite co-stars. He revealed her as his preferred leading lady along with Rekha. He also admitted he had a crush on Mandhuri and were it not for his wife, he would have flirted with her.
