Designer Rachel Roy has a style tip for men: Wear well-fitted denims paired with a bomber jacket
From intern to creative director at a fashion house to one of the most popular names on the fashion scene, Rachel Roy is very much in demand. She’s dressed celebrities like Kate Hudson, Sharon Stone and even Michelle Obama. The celebrated designer was recently in the city as a judge for the Woolmark International Prize, where she was looking for the next “strong voice” in fashion.

How has your sense of style changed over the years?
I look for shapes that make me feel both strong and smart, and balance feminine details with masculine classics such as blazers and oxfords. I like to be at the intersection of smart and sexy.

What is the most prized item in your wardrobe?
My grandmother’s slip from the 1940s. It reminds me that elegance must always start from the inside.

What are your go-to brands?
I have tremendous respect for the young Council of Fashion Designers of America (CDFA) designers, just starting out. They have it so much harder than my generation did. Some of the last designers I purchased are Marchesa — who I adore, Vera Wang, and Payal Singhal.

What is the one thing you splurge on?
Good healthy clean food, sheets and luggage, since I travel so much.

What are the top five wardrobe must-haves for men?
A suit with strong crisp shoulders, well-fitted denims, a bomber jacket, T-shirts with a good neckline and oxford with the right collar for the face shape.

What qualities in men do women notice?
Confidence, intelligence, kindness.

What is the biggest style mistake that men make?
Wearing an ill-fitting suit. Tailoring is key – a suit should fit like a glove, like the gentlemen in The Night Manager.

What’s the best style advice you’ve received?
Listen to your soul and instinct. Even when it goes against the grain, you can never lose at being yourself.
