Marathi cinema has had another successful outing with Deool Band 2. The Pravin Tarde directorial, which follows the 2015 film Deool Band, performed strongly at the box office and went on to cross the Rs 100 crore mark. But behind the film’s journey to the big screen is an interesting story involving Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan and a Rs 42 lakh bill. Now, the movie made its digital debut.

Deool Band 2 gets an OTT release after Rs 100 crore success

Deool Band 2 is now streaming on Prime Video, giving audiences who missed its theatrical run a chance to watch the Marathi hit from home. The film arrived in cinemas on May 21 and continued the story of its predecessor, with themes surrounding devotion to Swami Samarth, faith and the hardships faced by farmers in Maharashtra.

Directed by Pravin Tarde, Deool Band 2 is a sequel to the 2015 Marathi film Deool Band. The new film takes forward its spiritual themes while also addressing serious social issues, including farmer suicides.

The film explores the relationship between faith and atheism and brings the struggles of farmers into its narrative. Its theatrical performance turned out to be a major success, with the film reportedly crossing the Rs 100 crore mark at the box office.

Following its digital release, Tarde also encouraged audiences to give the film a watch. In a social media post, the filmmaker said that those who had not watched the movie should definitely see it, while those who had already watched it could return to it again. His message suggested that the film was designed to evoke strong emotions even on repeat viewings.

With the film now available on Prime Video, viewers who could not catch it in theatres can finally watch the sequel online.

How Shah Rukh Khan helped Deool Band 2

While Deool Band 2 eventually became a box-office success, the makers faced a financial hurdle before the film could reach theatres. The issue was related to the Digital Cinema Package (DCP), the digital format required to screen a movie in cinemas.

Speaking to Abhijat Marathi Filmy, Tarde revealed that he had initially budgeted around Rs 12 lakh for the DCP. However, the actual cost reportedly rose to Rs 42 lakh. For a regional production working with a limited budget, arranging the additional amount became difficult.

Tarde then approached Shah Rukh Khan's production house, Red Chillies Entertainment, and explained the situation. He reportedly told the team that Deool Band 2 was a Marathi film made on a limited budget and requested their assistance.

The matter eventually reached Shah Rukh Khan. According to Tarde, the actor's team already knew about the filmmaker through Mulshi Pattern, which was later remade in Hindi as Antim: The Final Truth, starring Salman Khan.

The superstar then reportedly asked about Deool Band 2 and wanted to know more about the film. Tarde said his team explained that the movie was an emotional project and that its makers had completed the DCP but were unable to clear the pending payment.

Shah Rukh Khan reportedly told his team to waive the bill

Tarde recalled that Shah Rukh Khan responded by asking his team to waive the pending amount and release the DCP.

SRK said, "Waive off their bill. It’s a Marathi film. Give them the DCP. We can sort out the payments later. If it’s a good film, give them the DCP.’ They showed tremendous respect towards Marathi cinema. For him, the film was more important than the money. I credit all these people for the success of the film. Today, the film is heading towards the ₹100-crore club and everyone is appreciating it. But what Shah Rukh Khan did when the film was nothing, when nobody knew whether it would work or not, will always be remembered. He helped us without any guarantee of success. I will forever be grateful to him."

For Tarde, the gesture was particularly meaningful because it came before anyone knew whether Deool Band 2 would become a hit. He credited the support from Shah Rukh Khan and the Red Chillies team as one of the factors that helped the film reach audiences.

The director also said the gesture demonstrated respect for Marathi cinema. The film eventually went on to enjoy a successful theatrical run and reportedly crossed the Rs 100 crore mark, making the earlier support even more significant in retrospect.

Deool Band 2 cast and story

Deool Band 2 features Mohan Joshi and Snehal Tarde in key roles. Mangesh Desai, Sanskruti Balgude, Devendra Gaikwad, Savita Malpekar and Pravin Tarde are also part of the cast.

The sequel builds on the world established by Deool Band while tackling themes of spirituality and belief. Alongside its focus on devotion to Swami Samarth, the film also addresses farmer suicides and the challenges faced by farming communities.

Now that the film has moved from its successful theatrical run to streaming, Deool Band 2 is available for a wider audience.
