With Isha Ambani and Anand Piramal’s engagement, the two high-powered business families have given form to that old Hindi film cliche of transforming friendship into family relations. The young scions “have been long-time friends and both their families share a strong bond of friendship for over four decades”.
In fact, at an event a couple of years back, the groom-to-be’s mother, Swati Piramal, had recounted the courtship days of Mukesh and Nita Ambani, and how she and husband Ajay bore witness to the budding romance.
It was a time when Mukesh drove a green Fiat, and took a ride on the famous double decker bus of Mumbai to woo his future wife, known as Nayantara Dalal at the time. Piramal read out nostalgialaden parts about Mukesh and Nita’s love story from the book being launched that evening, recalling how the businessman drove for three hours into the city from Patalganga (where the Ambanis were building a plant back then) to meet his wife-to-be.
Mukesh and Nita would meet at the Piramal House. “Every day she [Nita] would come from a drive with Mukesh and we would wait for her. And Ajay [Piramal] would ask her, did he hold your hand today? So we saw the first of the romance. They were wonderful days,” Piramal had said at the time.

And now the two families have witnessed a budding romance in their next generation. According to a statement released by the Piramals, Anand proposed to Isha at a temple in Mahabaleshwar (where the family owns a restored heritage property). “The couple celebrated the occasion with a lunch, joined by their parents – Nita, Mukesh, Swati and Ajay, Isha’s grandparents, Kokilaben Ambani and Purnimaben Dalal, Isha’s twin brother Akash, younger brother Anant, Anand’s sister Nandini, Peter, Anya, Dev and other family members,” the statement added.
The couple will tie the knot in December this year.
