Work can sometimes kill you. Literally. This is the theme of the new Netflix Korean supernatural drama Dead End Job, where an out-of-his-luck man, Hyuk-jun, thinks he has found the solution to his financial woes after he lands a high-paying part-t...

What Happens After Hyeok-jun Opens The Forbidden Door?
Hyuk-jun’s story unfolds over eight episodes. Gradually, he stumbles upon a terrifying truth – his father, who disappeared 20 years earlier after experiencing soul-crushing debt, also used this agency. Aided by his younger sister, Ji-yoon (Typhoon Family’s Kim Min-ha), and Yeon-joo (Tastefully Yours’ Go Min-si), an enigmatic investigator, he sets out to unravel the truth behind the unsettling events at the agency.
What Is The Truth Behind Spider Staffing Agency?
At the end of the series, some truths about the agency are revealed, but the audience is also left with many questions. Mr S, a charming middleman, is shown to admit that the agency sends part-timers to their deaths. The worksites exist where the border between the world of the living and the dead is most fragile. Workers are sent to these sites as sacrifices to maintain the boundaries between the two worlds. Hyuk-jun is shown to be quite the expert at staying alive against all odds.Yeon-Joo’s Tragic Past Revealed
Yeon Joo is revealed to be an inhabitant of the other world. However, she was not always a monster. She was once a young woman trying to make ends meet as a factory worker forty years ago. When she called out the cruel work conditions of the factory along with co-workers, they were subjected to violence. She was put in a locker by a colleague who was determined to protect her from the violence. This was apparently a doorway to the other world, and when she came out of the locker, four decades had passed. It is not indicated when she became a monster from a human.According to Time Magazine, Yeon Joo's backstory was inspired by a real-life woman, Jeon Tae-il, who died in 1970 through self-immolation to protest the sexual harassment female labourers faced, along with low wages, police brutality, and despicable working conditions.
Yeon Joo’s traumatic experience as a female labourer has made her apathetic towards human beings. She sends Hyuk-jun to the other world, promising him he could meet his father if he survives a shift at a deadly amusement park. Mr S tells Hyuk’s sister that Yeon Joo intends to obliterate the boundaries between the two worlds and let monsters take over, as the human world has failed its most vulnerable - the factory workers.
Despite Mr S's caution, Hyuk-jun ultimately decides to unlock the door. He doesn't trust Mr. S., who brutally uses forced labour to kill destitute people, even though he doesn't fully understand the ramifications of his choice. He considers Mr S's ruthlessness unfathomable after seeing him shoot Yeon-joo several times. Yeon-joo and Mr S are pulled into the depths of a terrible storm of dark energy that then tries to swallow Hyeok-jun as well. Hyuk-jun, ensnared in its hold, has an unanticipated chance to see and talk to his father.
Hyuk sees his father clutching the money he once hoped to share with his family. Before he gets claimed by the world, his sister rescues him from the door, and the door is closed by the siblings, thereby halting an apocalypse just in time.
Hyuk returns to a normal life – he is seen paying his debts off, though he is also shown to remain a part-time worker. He is shown to receive a text from the staffing agency and is offered the position of Mr S. He receives a pre-recorded voice message from Mr S, who wonders if Hyuk would make different decisions as the manager. Just before the series is about to end, Hyuk is shown opening his mouth to form a reply, but we are not informed if he accepts the offer or declines. Astonishingly (or not), Ji Yoon also gets an offer to be a part of the Kyung-il Group, which is owned by Hyuk’s agency and the amusement park he worked at.
Many questions are left unanswered, which leaves room for another season, although producers have not confirmed whether the TV series will have one.
