It may sound like a small trick, but it is a useful tip for anyone who regularly buys plants in plastic nursery pots. Loosening the soil around the sides can make it easier to remove the plant without pulling too hard on the stem or damaging the roots.

For those looking to grow roses at home, gardening experts also recommend paying attention to where the plant is placed. According to experts at Phostrogen, most roses do best in a spot that receives around six to eight hours of sunlight a day. However, the area should also be protected from strong winds, which can damage the stems.

Roses also need enough space around them. Giving each plant room to grow can help avoid competition for soil and allow better air circulation.

David Beckham's growing interest in gardening has now been celebrated in a rather special way, with a rose named after him.

The Sir David Beckham Rose was created by British rose company David Austin Roses at the request of Beckham's daughter, Harper. The rose was developed around the time Beckham celebrated his 50th birthday.

According to David Austin Roses, she wanted the rose to represent something lasting that could grow alongside the Beckham family. The company said the request reflected the time Harper and her father spend together in the family garden.

The rose has white blooms with touches of pink and yellow and features golden stamens. It also has a distinctive fragrance described as having notes of banana, honey, nougat, clove and myrrh.

The new rose was showcased at the Chelsea Flower Show as part of David Austin's Cotswold Garden display, which received a gold award.
