Danseuse Mrinalini Sarabhai passes away at 97

Mrinalini Sarabahi, who had founded the Darpana Academy of Performing Arts, passed away after she was hospitalised due to an infection.

GANDHINAGAR: Noted danseuse Mrinalini Sarabhai passed away in Ahmedabad on Thursday. She was 97.

A Padma Bibhushan awardee, Sarabhai was admitted to a private hospital following age related complications. Her cremation will take place in Pethapur village in Gandhinagar.

Born on May 11, 1918, in Kerala, Mrinalini had studied in Shantiniketan set up by Rabindranath Tagore under his tutelage. She was married to Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, the pioneer of India’s space research as well as one of the key layers behind setting up of Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad.

According to her son Kartikeya Sarabhai, Mrinalini had developed an infection that led to the deterioration of her health.

She had established Darpana Academi of Performing Arts in Ahmedabad, which is now run by her daughter and dancer activist Mallika Sarabhai.
