Corona fight brigade: Virushka's undisclosed donation; designer Sabyasachi gives Rs 1.5 cr, Raina contributes Rs 52 lakh

NEW DELHI: Hours after Prime Minster Narendra Modi announced a special emergency fund for the nation to fight crisis like Covid-19 on Saturday, celebrities from various walks of life came together to show their appreciation. From designer Sabyasachi to cricketer Virat Kohli and actor Anushka Sharma, several stars stepped up to do their bit.

On Monday, Team India skipper Kohli and his actor-wife Sharma took to social media to pledge their support to PM-CARES Fund and Maharashtra Chief Minster's Relief Funds to combat the spread of deadly coronavirus pandemic, which has left the entire world in disarray.



The couple, who have been constantly urging people to practice social-distancing via video messages, did not specify how much they would be donating. The posts made by Viruskha, as their fans like to call them affectionately, read, "Our hearts are breaking looking at the suffering of so many and we hope our contribution, in some way, helps easing the pain of our fellow citizens."


On Tuesday, Batsman Rohit Sharma also donated Rs 80 lakh to fight the rapidly-spreading COVID-19 pandemic, saying the onus is on the citizens to help the country get back on its feet. The vice-captain of the Indian ODI team donated Rs 45 lakh and Rs 25 lakh to PM_cares Fund and CM's Relief Fund (Maharashtra), respectively.

He has also given Rs 5 lakh to 'Zomato Feeding India', which is helping families affected by the ongoing national lockdown, and another Rs 5 lakh to help aid the welfare of stray dogs.

Actor Kartik Aryan said it's the "absolute need of the hour" for people to come together as a nation. "Whatever I am, whatever money I've earned, is only because of the people of India; and for us I am contributing Rs. 1 crore to the PM-CARES Fund. I urge all my fellow Indians also to help as much as possible," the 'Love Aaj Kal' actor wrote.


Actor Shilpa Shetty, along with her husband Raj Kundra, pledged to donate Rs 21 lakhs to PM-CARES.

"For humanity, our country and fellow citizens that need us; now is the time, let's do our bit. @TheRajKundra & I pledge 21 lacs to @narendramodi ji‘s PM-CARES Fund. Every drop in the ocean counts, so I urge you all to help fight this situation," her post read.

After fashion designer Anita Dongre's generous contribution of Rs 1.5 crore, celebrity-favourite designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee on Saturday also pledged to donate Rs 10 million (Rs 1 crore) of personal funds to the PM's National Relief Fund (PMNRF) and Rs 5 million (Rs 50 lakh) to the Chief Minister of West Bengal's Relief Fund to help the battle against coronavirus. The 46-year-old designer took to Instagram to share the news.

The ace designer also said, in his statement, that he secured his employees, and expected that the donation will be used to ramp up medical facilities in the country. He also stressed that the contribution is not considered as a 'charity' nor did he seek any kind of 'praise.'

"Everything we do today combats the massive challenge that we are facing as a nation and as a world. Our investments in today's efforts will come back to us all exponentially in the future," his statement added.

He also urged everyone to stay home as a measure to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar was one of the first celebrities to contribute Rs 25 crore from his savings to the PM-CARES Fund.


Following the 'Kesari' star was actor Varun Dhawan who also took to Twitter to pledge his support by contributing Rs 30 lakhs to the PM- CARES fund.


Personalities from the sports fraternity also came forward to show their support.

Cricketer-turned-politician and Lok Sabha MP Gautam Gambhir on Thursday said he has decided to contribute his two years' salary as an MP to the Prime Minister-CARES fund to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic sweeping through the country.

The BJP's Lok Sabha member from East Delhi made the announcement on his social media page, urging people to come forward and donate generously.


Earlier on Saturday, Gambhir had released Rs 1 crore out of his MP Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS) towards the relief efforts amid the coronavirus pandemic. He also donated his one month's salary towards the Central Relief Fund. It is time that all resources of the country be directed towards fighting COVID-19," he wrote on the microblogging site.

Cricketer Suresh Raina on Saturday also pledged to donate Rs 31 lakhs to PM-CARES Fund, and Rs 21 to UP CM's Disaster Relief Fund against the COVID-19 battle.

"It's time we all do our bit to help defeat #COVID19. I'm pledging Rs 52 lakh for the fight against #Corona (Rs31 lakh to the PM-CARES Fund & Rs21 lakh to the UP CM's Disaster Relief Fund). Please do your bit too. Jai Hind! #StayHomeIndia @narendramodi @PMOIndia @myogiadityanath," Raina tweeted.


Lauding Raina's effort, Modi replied "That's a brilliant fifty, @ImRaina! #IndiaFightsCorona".

India's richest sports body Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Saturday joined the corona fight and pledged a donation of Rs 51 crore to the Prime Minister's Relief Fund.


BCCI's affiliated units have also contributed in this donation. "Sourav Ganguly, President, Mr Jay Shah, Honorary Secretary and Office Bearers of the along with the affiliated state associations on Saturday announced to donate Rs 51 crores to the Prime Minister's Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations Fund (PM-CARES Fund) to contribute towards strengthening the nation's disaster management capacities and encourage research to combat COVID-19 and protect Indian citizens," the BCCI release stated.

A source close to Rahane confirmed to news agency PTI that Team India's Test team vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane donated Rs 10 lakh to the Maharastra Chief Minister's Relief Fund. He didn't mentioned anything about his contribution on social media.

Google chief Sundar Pichai has donated Rs 5 crore to Give India, matching Google's earlier donation to the non-profit organisation for the coronavirus pandemic.

"Thank you @sundarpichai for matching @Googleorg's Rs 5 crore grant to provide desperately needed cash assistance for vulnerable daily wage worker families...," Give India said in a tweet.

Previously, Google had announced an over USD 800 million commitment towards efforts to tackle Covid-19 pandemic that claimed thousands of lives globally. This includes a USD 200 million investment fund for NGOs and banks to help small businesses access capital.

Besides, Google has also teamed up with Apple to work on a contact tracing approach designed with strong controls and protections for user privacy.

Hyundai Motor India on Monday said it has donated Rs 7 crore to the PM CARES Fund to fight the Covid-19 crisis.

"Our contribution to the PM CARES Fund stands testament to solidarity we hold with the people of India, amidst this crisis," Hyundai Motor India MD and CEO SS Kim said in a statement.

In challenging times such as these, the company will continue giving back to help India defeat this adversity, he added.

Reliance Foundation, the philanthropic arm of India's largest firm Reliance Industries, on April 20, pledged free meals, building country's first Covid-19 hospital and is supplying PPEs and masks as part of its effort to help the nation fight the Covid-19 pandemic.

Reliance Foundation's 'Mission Anna Seva' that aims to provide over 3 crore meals to marginalised communities and frontline workers facing hardships during the lockdown, is the largest free meal programme by any corporate foundation globally, its chairperson Nita Ambani said.

Home grown Dabur group, on Tuesday, pledged Rs 21 crore to support the relief efforts and help the immediate needs of people affected from the Covid-19 pandemic.

The group will also provide assistance to people engaged in frontline efforts to fight the virus and support to members of vulnerable sections of the society and migrant workers, who are the hardest hit by this pandemic.

Indian software major Infosys, too, joined the Covid-19 fight with a Rs 100 crore donation. The Infosys Foundation has contributed half of this amount to the PM CARES Fund to expand hospital capacity for treatment and enable hospital stays for poor Covid-19 patients.
