Sometimes, a workplace relationship can feel stronger than a regular professional arrangement, especially when it lasts for years. A man recently shared how his cook, who had been part of his household for four years, suddenly decided to leave. Despite regular salary hikes, festival gifts, bonuses, and support during her absences, her departure happened in just a two-minute conversation, leaving him with an unexpected lesson about expectations and relationships.

Social media user Ankit Pandey took to X to share the experience, explaining that his cook informed him one day that she would not be returning the next day. The cook had worked with his family for four years. During this time, Pandey said he regularly increased her salary by 15% every year. Her monthly pay had eventually reached Rs 15,500.

He also shared that their relationship went beyond just salary payments. During festivals like Holi, Diwali, Rakshabandhan, and Navratri, he would give her gifts, including sarees, sweets, bonuses, and cash. Even when she was away for 10 to 15 days, he never reduced her salary. Pandey believed that the bond built over years carried value beyond money.



When he asked her about the reason behind leaving, she simply said that she had found another place offering a higher salary. He told her he was willing to match the new offer. But her response surprised him. She explained that she had already taken an advance from the new employer and had made up her mind. She asked him to find another cook.


For Pandey, the sudden end of a four-year association came as a shock. A relationship that he thought was built on trust and loyalty ended in a brief conversation. Reflecting on the experience, he said that people do not always leave because they were treated poorly. Sometimes, they move on because they believe a better opportunity is waiting elsewhere.

However, the incident also made him realise something deeper about human relationships. The importance one person gives to a bond may not always be the same as what the other person feels. Pandey questioned whether people have experienced moments where they invested years into a relationship, only to realise that the connection meant more to them than it did to the other person.

Responding to this, Ankit Pandey agreed that employees should also choose better opportunities but added that after four years, he would still expect a proper handover and notice period. He said respect should work both ways. Another user said the story felt emotional, noting that even after years of support, yearly hikes, festival gifts, bonuses, and uninterrupted salary, the decision was made within minutes. They added that people often leave not only because of poor treatment but also when a better opportunity appears.
