Controversial 'brassiere' comment row: Case filed against Shweta Tiwari in MP for hurting religious sentiments

TV star Shweta Tiwari, who became a household name for her performance in producer Ekta Kapoor's 2001 popular show 'Kasautii Zindagi Kay', has courted controversy after she commented about her brassiere while referring to God during a press conference in Bhopal on Wednesday. The 41-year-old actress who was in the city for the promotion of her upcoming web series 'Showstopper' along with co-stars Rohit Roy, Digangana Suryavanshi and Sourabh Raaj Jain was snapped on video which started being circulated.

On Friday, Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra confirmed that a case has been registered against the actress for allegedly hurting religious sentiments by her comment referring to God.

Also read: Shweta Tiwari in trouble, MP Home Minister orders probe after her controversial remark on God 89179433 A case has been registered against Tiwari on Friday under the Indian Penal Code section 295 (A) - Deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings or any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs. Mishra also added that further action will be taken as per the regulations.



An official of the Shyamla Hills police station told PTI that the First Information Report (FIR) was filed based on the complaint lodged by Sonu Prajapati, a local citizen, who alleged that the actor has hurt his religious sentiments through her comment.

"We will summon Tiwari to the police station either by sending her a notice by post or by sending a police team to her place to serve notice," the official added reported PTI.

The offence is non-bailable, but an arrest can't be made according to the Supreme Court's directive issued earlier as it attracts imprisonment of less than seven years.

According to PTI, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Kotwali) Bittu Sharma said that the actress would be formally arrested, but she can get bail from the police station itself after which she has to get it rectified by a competent court.

On Thursday, the minister had directed the city police to investigate the matter and submit a report within 24 hours. He had earlier condemned her comments.

A video of Tiwari referring to God while commenting on her brassiere went viral on social media. Netizens have also expressed disappointment over her comments.


Local media reports suggest that Tiwari made the comment as a joke in reference to Jain's character in the show. Jain, who played the role of Lord Krishna in the mythological show, will essay the role of a 'bra fitter' in the upcoming series.
