Intricate mosaic reveals villa’s lavish interiors
According to a report by People magazine, the researchers uncovered an elaborate Roman villa, complete with a colorful mosaic floor, a bathhouse and luxury artifacts dating back to 1600 years. At the centre of the discovery lies a remarkably well-preserved 12-square-metre polychrome mosaic, featuring thousands of tiny stone cubes in shades of red, white and dark blue-grey.Based on its design and construction, archaeologists believe the mosaic dates to the fourth century AD and may have once adorned one of the villa’s principal reception or dining spaces. The excavation also revealed an unexpectedly elaborate bathhouse, highlighting the wealth and status of the people who lived at the site.
Bathhouse and artefacts reveal Roman wealth
Project leader Dr Susan Greaney from the University of Exeter’s Department of Archaeology and History noted that such a sophisticated bathhouse had not been anticipated, adding that the villa was evidently occupied by people of considerable wealth and high social standing. The bathhouse emerged as one of the excavation’s most striking finds.A separate stone structure was discovered containing at least two plunge pools, both built using waterproof Roman concrete. Remnants of painted plaster on the walls further indicated the building’s once-grand appearance. A range of personal possessions and domestic objects was also recovered from the site. These included a carved blue gemstone featuring the Roman goddess Victory, a finely crafted copper-alloy bracelet, a silver-plated spoon, pottery vessels used for serving food and drinks, and a large storage jar.
