Colon cancer can creep in silently, showing up as tiny, easy-to-miss symptoms that most of us brush off. Bright red blood in your stool or a sudden change in bowel habits might seem harmless—or just haemorrhoids—but sometimes your gut is trying to tell you something more serious. Harvard-trained doctor Saurabh Sethi shares the key warning signs that should never be ignored, and why catching them early can be life-saving.

Blood in the stool

Not all bleeding is obvious. Bright red or dark, tarry stools can signal bleeding in the colon. Don’t assume it’s just haemorrhoids—if you notice it, get checked.

Persistent bowel changes

Constipation, diarrhoea, or unusually narrow stools lasting more than a few days can be a red flag. Sudden changes in your bathroom habits shouldn’t be ignored.

Abdominal pain and cramping

Frequent bloating, cramps, or new abdominal pain may indicate trouble in the colon. If discomfort persists, it’s time for a professional evaluation.

Unexplained weight loss and fatigue

Losing weight without dieting or lifestyle changes, or feeling constantly tired, weak, or dizzy, can be a sign that your gut isn’t absorbing nutrients properly or that slow blood loss is causing anaemia.

Iron-deficiency anemia

Low iron levels in men or post-menopausal women may be an early hidden sign of colon problems. Labs showing unexplained anaemia should prompt further investigation.

Feeling of incomplete emptying

If you feel like you “can’t finish” after a bowel movement, it could point to a blockage or tumor growth.

Family history matters

Having close relatives with colon cancer increases your risk. Don’t delay screening if symptoms appear.

Takeaway

Most colon cancers start quietly. Detecting them early can boost the five-year survival rate to 90%. Don’t wait—get screened, and remember: a colonoscopy can save lives.
