Coco Lee, Hong Kong’s pop diva & voice of Mulan in Mandarin, passes away at 48 after suicide attempt; family says she was battling depression

Coco Lee, one of the most luminous figures in the Hong Kong entertainment industry, passed away at 48.

According to a Reuters report, the ‘Mulan’ singer died by suicide.

Lee’s sisters Carol and Nancy, announced the news of her demise through an emotional Instagram post. They revealed that the diva had debilitating depression, which worsened considerably over the past few months.


“With great sadness, we are here to break the most devastating news: Coco had been suffering from depression for a few years but her condition deteriorated drastically over the last few months,” the post read.

The sisters revealed that Lee had attempted to take her life on July 2. She was rushed to the Queen Mary Hospital (Hong Kong), where she remained in a state of coma until her death.

The sisters stated that although the star had sought professional help to deal with mental health, it didn’t work out for her in the long run.

Who Was Coco Lee?

One of the brightest stars of Hong Kong entertainment and pop culture, Coco Lee was the first Chinese singer to be signed by Sony Music globally, in 1996. Her debut album, eponymously named ‘Coco Lee’ became a monstrous hit in Asia that year. She also became the first Chinese American to perform at the Oscars in 2001, where she sang the song ‘A Love Before Time’ from Ang Lee’s action adventure, ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.’

She shot to worldwide fame after voicing for Fa Mulan, in the Mandarin version of the 1998 Disney blockbuster ‘Mulan’. She also sang the theme song ‘Reflection’ for the movie.

Born in 1975, in Hong Kong, she moved to the US during her childhood.

In a career spanning more than 30 years, she produced many chartbusters both in Mandarin as well as English. She has 18 albums to her credit. Her single, ‘Do You Want My Love’ debuted at number 4 in the US Billboard Chart in 1999.

She also had a successful run as an actress. Some of her notable works include Lee Xin’s ‘Master of Everything’ and ‘No Tobacco’ by Stanley Kwan.

In 2011, Lee married Bruce Rockowitz, a Canadian businessman who is the former CEO of the Hong Kong supply chain company Li & Fung.
