Ciccio Liberto: The guy who made soft, handmade footwear for racing professionals
For a long time, drivers wore generic shoes when they were flooring the accelerator.

If you are a racing fan on the lookout for gear beyond the usual merchandise, head to a small town in Sicily called Cefalu. It is the home of Ciccio Liberto, among the first people to make shoes dedicated to racing.
One of the very first pair of Racing Shoes signed Ciccio for the driver Nanni Galli. For a long time, drivers wore generic shoes when they were flooring the accelerator.
When Liberto started making soft, handmade footwear for racing, they were embraced by the drivers, most famously by Niki Lauda on the way to his victory in the 1977 season.
Recently, Fabrizio Stigliani, the director of watch design at luxury house Bulgari, stumbled upon Ciccio’s shoes.
“I discovered (them) during the Targa Florio vintage car rally in Celafu. They were made for Niki Lauda in the 1970s, and the design is still exactly the same,” Stigliani said, with awe.
