VV Vaageesan, an engineering student from Chennai, has taken legal action against the producers of Amaran after being bombarded with incessant calls from Sai Pallavi’s fans. According to a report by The Hindu, Vaageesan is demanding Rs 1.1 crore in damages after his phone number was used in the film without his consent.

The controversy began with a romantic scene in Amaran involving Sai Pallavi and Sivakarthikeyan’s characters, Indhu Rebecca Varghese and Major Mukund. In the scene, Sai’s character throws a crumpled piece of paper at the hero with her phone number written on it. Unbeknownst to the filmmakers, the number belongs to Vaageesan and is linked to essential accounts like his Aadhaar and bank details, making it nearly impossible for him to change it.

The trouble started after the film’s release on October 31, while Vaageesan was celebrating Diwali with his family. He began receiving numerous calls from fans trying to speak with Sai Pallavi. Initially confused, he realized the cause when the calls escalated in volume. Since then, he claims he has been unable to sleep, study, or perform basic daily tasks due to constant interruptions.

Vaageesan has filed for compensation, citing “mental agony and untold hardships,” and has also demanded that the filmmakers immediately remove his number from the movie. While he initially attempted to address the issue by posting on social media and tagging director Rajkumar Periyasamy and lead actor Sivakarthikeyan, his pleas went unanswered.

A Familiar Problem in Cinema

This isn’t the first time such an incident has occurred. In 2003, a person filed a lawsuit against the makers of Puri Jagannadh’s Shivamani, starring Nagarjuna, after their phone number was featured in the film. Similarly, in 2018, a Jharkhand resident sued over Akhil Akkineni’s film Hello, citing similar issues.

About Amaran

Produced by Kamal Haasan’s Raaj Kamal Films International, Amaran is an adaptation of the book series India’s Most Fearless: True Stories of Modern Military Heroes by Shiv Aroor and Rahul Singh. The film tells the story of Major Mukund, a counterterrorism officer who was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra for his bravery during a mission.

The controversy has now added an unexpected layer of attention to the film, though not the kind the filmmakers would have hoped for.
