'Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui' failed due to homophobia, says Ayushmann Khurrana

'Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui' was a 2021 film which explored the relationship between a cis bodybuilder and trans woman.
‘Vicky Donor’ star Ayushmann Khurrana recently reminisced about what went wrong with his last three movies ‘Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui’, ‘Anek’ and ‘Doctor G’ turns out to be box-office duds.
Helmed by Anubhav Sinha, ‘Anek’ minted just Rs 10 crore at the BO. ‘Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui’ and ‘Doctor G’ collected Rs 41 crore at the BO respectively.
The star said that while ‘Anek’ and ‘Doctor G’ had relatively very niche genres so did not appeal to a wider audience, homophobia might have been one of the reasons why ‘Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui’ could not succeed. The 2021 rom-com was the first Bollywood mainstream movie that had a trans character as one of the leads. Vaani Kapoor played a gym instructor and the love interest of Khurranna’s character who happened to be trans.
Speaking to a leading English daily, Khurrana dissected his past three failures. He said that ‘Anek’ was a docudrama with an extremely niche appeal so he was not surprised at it faring poorly at the BO. ‘Doctor G’ was an adult comedy with raunchy dialogues. He went on to say that the Anubhuti Kashyap movie did well for an A (adult) rated movie. However when it comes to ‘Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui’ the ‘Andhadhun’ star feels homophobia and anti-trans attitude had a role to play in its failure. “Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui, really don't do well commercially because, unfortunately, our country is homophobic,” he was quoted as saying.
However, the ‘Bala’ actor has no intention to stop being experimental when it came to films. He said he would continue being unconventional and taking ‘riskier’ projects. He would go on ‘’pushing boundaries’’ as an actor. He also added that he would stick to low and mid-budget movies as those lead to less financial ruin for producers and allow him more scope for experimentation.

The actor is known for his quirky roles and his offbeat yet entertaining slice-of-life movies such as ‘Bala’, ‘Dum Laga Ke Haisha’, ‘Dream Girl’ etc.
On the work front, he will next be seen in the comedy ‘An Action Hero’. Helmed by Anirudh Iyer this spoof comedy will hit the theatres on December 2.
