High-end Android smartphones are set to get a feature which will function similar to Apple's exclusive SOS via satellite, which on numerous occasions has saved people's lives.

Qualcomm at the annual Consumer Electronic Show (CES) 2023, the world’s biggest tech event, on Thursday announced 'Snapdragon Satellite', a satellite-based two-way capable messaging solution for premium smartphones.

The chip-maker and Iridium, a global satellite communications company, have joined hands to produce satellite-based connectivity feature for the next-gen premium Android smartphones.

The upcoming Snapdragon Satellite by Qualcomm will offer global coverage from pole to pole and can support two-way messaging for emergency use, SMS texting, and other messaging applications -- for a variety of purposes such as emergencies or recreation in remote, rural and offshore locations.

The company further mentioned that the Snapdragon Satellite isn’t just limited to smartphones and can further expand to other devices, including laptops, tablets, vehicles and IoT.

The partnership between Qualcomm and Iridium comes months after the tech giant Apple unveiled a similar feature allowing iPhone 14 smartphones to send emergency messages via satellite in some countries such as the United States and Canada. Those phones also contain a Qualcomm chip that can talk to satellites when there is no Wi-Fi or cellular data connection.

Qualcomm said on Thursday the new service, Snapdragon Satellite, will be available in certain regions from the second half of 2023 starting devices using the second generation Snapdragon 8 mobile platform.

Using Qualcomm's technology messages sent through the service will reach Iridium's satellite network. They will then be communicated to the recipient or emergency services.
