Can’t wait for all frogs to croak before acting

A frog-in-the-well attitude towards amphibian conservation will not do.

Frogs, ideally, should be the focus of more people than those interested in marrying into royalty by a lucky lip-lock with an amphibian. Particularly as no documented evidence has emerged so far of frogs morphing into eligible bachelor princes.

Of course, the fact that the world’s ‘loneliest amphibian’, a Sehuencas water frog named Romeo, finally found happiness with his Sehuencas Juliet from the cloud forests of Bolivia this January after a decade of solitude makes for a heartening modern-day froggy tale. But with democracy becoming as prevalent as mosquitoes, the utility of batrachian potentates as human spouses has diminished considerably.

Today, however, their relevance as prime consumers of winged disease vectors such as mosquitoes and water-clogging algae has leapfrogged over all other factors, including their contribution to fairy tales and French cuisine.

So, it is important to note that activists at a recent international seminar in Kolkata revealed that some 200 species of frogs and toads have croaked in the last 40 years. The corresponding buzz about the rising mosquito population is not surprising, therefore. Though there are still nearly 4,800 species of frogs and toads, when it comes to conservation of amphibians, a frog-in-the-well attitude will not do. We cannot wait for toadal extinction before taking action.
