The suspension of Mandal’s Twitter account set the social media ablaze with allegations of casteism against Twitter.

The hashtag #cancelallBlueTicksInIndia has been the top Twitter trend in India on Wednesdaywith over 54,000 tweets. For the uninitiated, the hashtag #cancelallBlueTicksInIndia is a movement to protest against Twitter’s casteist move to impose restrictions on the account of Dilip Mandal, a professor at Makhanlal Chaturvedi National University of Journalism in Bhopal and consulting editor for a news website.

Twitter had reportedly suspended Mandal’s account in March after he had tweeted about a booklet called ‘Bahujan Agenda’ and posted the details and the author’s contact. This was apparently seen as violation of Twitter’s terms of service.

TOI reported on Wednesday that Mandal had got back his account but he continued to campaign against Twitter.

The suspension of Mandal’s Twitter account and the subsequent reinstatement set social media ablaze with allegations of casteism against Twitter. Users alleged that Twitter deliberately tried to suppress the voices of those who belong to underprivileged communities.

Apart from #cancelallBlueTicksInIndia, hashtags like #CasteistTwitter, #TwitterHatesSCSTOBCMuslims, and #BrahmanicalTwitter were also trending on the microblogging site.

Some Twitter users were quick to point out that Hansraj Meena’s (the founder of Tribal Army) account is unverified even though he has 26,000 followers, while Jay Shah, who has merely 19 followers has a verified account.

While some accused Twitter of not verifying the handles of those from marginalised communities, others urged the platform to do away with its verification process altogether.

Several people were of the opinion that Twitter’s ‘blue tick’ verification system divides the society and hence, it should be done away with.
