If something works but not for the right reason, should it just be left alone?
Coronary stents have been considered lifesavers by heart attack victims and their families. Now, a meta study of several studies involving thousands of patients has come to the conclusion that these stents only have a placebo effect, that medication is as good as the procedure of installing a stent at the place where a block inside the coronary artery has been removed.

This raises several interesting questions. Now, a placebo works because the patient receiving it firmly believes in its healing powers. If the patient gets more worldly wise and looks up meta studies of clinical studies, will a stent fail to save his life the next time he develops a coronary block?

Is it better to wise up or to get cured? Perfect operation that kills the patient or crude surgery that saves a life?
