For dog lovers, a warm, sloppy kiss from their furry friend is often a sign of affection. But according to medical experts, that innocent lick could carry life-threatening consequences. A gut doctor’s recent warning has sent shockwaves through social media, urging pet owners to rethink their close contact with their canine companions.
The Bacterial Threat Lurking in Dog Saliva
In an Instagram video, The Gut Doc revealed a shocking fact: letting a dog lick your face—or worse, an open wound—could expose you to Capnocytophaga, a bacteria known to cause severe infections, including flesh-eating disease, sepsis, and even limb amputation.
“Did you know that letting a dog lick your face or near an open wound can expose you to Capnocytophaga?” the doctor warns in the video. “This bacteria can lead to sepsis, life-threatening infections, and even the need for amputations.”
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) corroborates this, stating that while rare, Capnocytophaga infections can be devastating. The bacteria, commonly found in the mouths of dogs and cats, can cause severe complications when transmitted through bites, scratches, or even saliva contact with broken skin.
While most people won’t fall ill from dog saliva, those with weakened immune systems face a higher risk. The CDC lists vulnerable groups, including individuals with diabetes, liver disease, cancer, or those undergoing chemotherapy. Additionally, people who do not have a spleen or suffer from alcohol dependency are more susceptible to severe infections.

Symptoms of a Capnocytophaga infection can include:
Blisters, redness, or swelling around the contact area
Fever, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach pain
Muscle or joint pain, headaches, and confusion
In extreme cases, blood infections that can lead to sepsis, organ failure, or gangrene

A Nightmare Turned Reality
For some, this terrifying warning has already become a harsh reality. In 2019, Marie Turner from Stark County, Ohio, returned home from vacation and was greeted by her beloved dog’s affectionate licks. Unbeknownst to her, she had a tiny cut on her hand—just enough for Capnocytophaga to enter her bloodstream.
Within days, Marie developed a severe infection, which escalated to the point where doctors were forced to amputate both her arms and legs to save her life.
This doesn’t mean you have to cut off all affection with your pet, but doctors strongly advise against allowing dogs to lick your face or any broken skin. If your dog does manage to sneak in a lick, it’s crucial to wash the area immediately with soap and water.
