Marwari women are unparalleled when it comes to saving money and being incredibly creative in how they curtail excessive spending and unnecessary expenses, without compromising on quality or comfort. Taking to Instagram, chartered accountant and entrepreneur Ankit Agrawal revealed how Marwari homemakers use ingenuity when it comes to running the household on a budget. Agrawal explained that Marwari women need no MBA degree to learn how to budget and manage their funds, expertly explaining that their “kitchen is their business school.”

The entrepreneur also explained that these women know the details of the cost of vegetables and manage their cooking accordingly. If the onion costs Rs 20, they will use it in their dishes; if it is increased to Rs 30, they will manage the cooking without onions. At the beginning of every month these women set aside a budget for rations, electricity, milk, expenses for children – school, tuition, etc. If the expenses exceed in any category, they curtail the expenses in another. They maintain an in-depth ledger of these expenses without Excel sheets.

How They Manage Household Expenses

Rotis which are more than a day old will often be made into parathas. Extra rice would be turned into pulao. If some vegatable curry is left, it will be cooked into a new sabzi curry. Marwari women ensure no food goes to waste and are often recycled into making other delicious dishes. “Whether the husband is earning Rs 30 lakh or Rs 30,000, the women will run households with the same excellence. Even if the husband’s salary is meagre, she will not let it affect the quality of food and lifestyle – without extravagant expenditure. If guests arrive, they will be treated to grand thalis, and for every occasion, there will be a variety of sweets prepared. He then concluded the video, saying that a big reason behind the wealth of the community is because the women keep the budget in control and also work along with their spouses to reduce expenses and build wealth. “Marwari women’s financial intelligence needs to be credited,” he stated.
