Krishna Janmashtami is a Hindu festival that is observed to celebrate Lord Krishna’s birthday. This year, Janmashtami is being celebrated on two different dates in the country. Some states are celebrating it on August 18, while others are observing the festival on August 19.
Whether schools, colleges and offices will remain shut or not on Janmashtami shall depend on multiple factors. While government schools in many states, including Kendriya Vidyalayas, will not be operational on August 19, there are some government institutions that will remain functional. Although private schools are not bound to follow the list of public holidays issued by the government, they may remain shut on the occasion of Janmashtami.
As stated earlier, the directions rolled out for declaring Janmashtami a public holiday vary from state to state. On August 19, schools and banks will not be operational in Bihar. In Goa, schools, colleges and government institutions will not be given a holiday on this occasion. All the government and private banks in Haryana will remain shut on August 19. The Himachal Pradesh government has declared a public holiday for schools and banks on August 19.
