Dhanush starrer 'Thiruchitrambalam' hit theatres on Thursday. The Tamil musical family drama film is directed by Mithran R Jawahar.

Actor Dhanush needs no introduction. Generally, the road to stardom for any actor is never through massy movies but through simple and natural movies. This is true for every actor, from Shah Rukh Khan to Rajinikanth. Although netizens love massy movies, simple movies are relatable as the audience feels connected with the character. The best example of this is the exceptional film choices of Dhanush.

Most of Dhanush’s movies often work on a macro level. His films have a personal conflict. We never see him showing off his muscle, fighting corrupt goons, or saving the world from larger-than-life issues; instead, he plays an ordinary man. Doing this has definitely thrown the ball in his court, and he’s well known for his regular Joe character.

Here are five films where the audience has loved Dhanush’s sweet guy next door character:

Thiruda Thirudi

Dhanush’s debut movies, Thulluvadho Ilami and Kadhal Kondein, have a cult following; still, Thiruda Thirudi is one of his best performances. This is the movie that took Dhanush to the masses. Although the movie had instability and politically wrong elements, the film was a massive hit among youngsters. This was primarily because the youngsters could relate to the middle-class man character played by Dhanush. Also, most of the credit for the movie’s success goes to the Manmadha Rasa, the then high-octane track, and Dhanush’s power-packed performance in this song.

This movie’s entire plot can be summed up in just a single line- a middle-class boy blackmailing his rich girlfriend’s brother and becoming a wealthy businessman out of the acquired money so that he can live a happy life with his girlfriend. We all know this plot is wrong on several levels, but Dhanush and Prakash Raj’s performance makes up for it. The rift and joy between Dhanush and Prakash Raj is a delight for the eyes.

Yaaradi Nee Mohini

Yaaradi Nee Mohini, directed by Mithran Jawahar, the same director for Thiruchitrambalam, is the Tamil revamp of Venkatesh’s Aadavari Matalaku Arthale Verule. Most of Dhanush’s movies have a gripping tale of the father's and son's poignant relationship. Such movies that depict complicated familial relationship like this film is hard to find in today’s movie culture.

Velai Illa Pattadhaari (VIP)

Velai Illa Pattadhaari needs no introduction. Just upon its release, this was an instant hit. Dhanush plays the role of an educated engineer who, despite being unemployed, does not believe in accepting jobs unrelated to his field of education. His mother’s death forces him to take up a job. His average Joe chacatre suddenly changes into a massy character lust like Dhanush’s later movies.

Thanga Magan

In the Tamil film industry, perhaps Dhanush is the sole self-aware actor. He knows what role he chooses and puts his hundred percent into it. By Thanga Magan's release, Dhanush had already stepped into Bollywood with movies like Ranjhanaa and Shamitabh. Then, when he was at the peak of his career, any actor would have turned down Thanga Magan for the small-scale role, but Dhanush did not. This is what makes him unique. He always stays rooted in his origin and never forgets what made him a star; it was small movies like this. He decided to act in Thanga Magan, which may be why we also have Thiruchitrambalam.
