Garmin has been leading the race in GPS running watches, but in a first and fresh departure from their usual fitness bands, Garmin has introduced the Vivomove: a classic yet stylish analog watch. It’s meant for someone who doesn’t like to have a screen on their wrist but still wants the benefits of being able to track steps, activity and sleep. Obviously, a huge benefit of not having a screen is the battery life.

The standard CR2025 lithium coin cell battery should last up to a year and can be replaced easily. It is also waterproof to 5ATM — this means you can wear it while swimming or in the shower.

Once you install the Garmin Connect app on your smartphone and sync it via Bluetooth, the trackers get to work. The dial has two tracking bars: the one on the left shows how close you are to reaching your set steps goal while the one on the right checks your movement and turns red every 15 minutes of inactivity. Every time you sync, you can check details of your goal achieved — distance, calories burned and your sleep.

We think the watch looks really good though you should know that it does not have any vibration alerts. But overall, if you are a fitness enthusiast and want an analogue timepiece that goes with your suit or evening dress, the Garmin Vivomove is just right.

If the price seems a bit on the higher side, you could always go for the Vivomove Sport (Rs 14,990) — it offers the same functionality but without the fancy leather strap. At the time of writing, it was available on Flipkart at a special offer of Rs 10,990.

Freaky Racing
Game for Android and iOS
Get it for: Free

Early 1980, one of the popular arcade racing games was Namco’s Rally-X — it had tiny, pixellated, openwheel race cars in a top-down environment. Perhaps as a throwback to those early gaming days comes Freaky Racing.

It’s a wonderfully simple, 8-bit style racing game. Your blocky racing car accelerates automatically; you only need to steer to follow the road and avoid obstacles like other cars, oil spills and deviously placed road blocks.

Steering is super-sensitive but everything speeds up in a while, making scores more than 100 quite rare. Global leader boards are available if you feel like a challenge. You can also switch off music and effect sounds individually. The game is free and ad-supported — every once in a while, a full-screen video ad will play if you are connected to the internet.

You can also choose to skip the ad after a few seconds. There are no other banner ads or interruptions. Not a bad tradeoff actually. Try it out for a bit of old-school arcade fun.

Parentlane
App for iOS and Android
Get it for: Free

For parents with children under 8 years, tracking overall growth is an essential element in bringing them up. Parentlane is a free app that lets you track your child’s development digitally on your smartphone. The app requires you to create your child’s profile on first run and answer a few basic questions about your child (learning skills, speech and language, handeye coordination and so on).

Once the profile is created, you use the app to track your child’s development on a daily basis. The app also gives you access to a discussion forum where you can view queries and answers from other parents (or ask your own queries). The news section has useful tips, tricks, and activities for your child. It's a great way to connect with other parents and stay focused on development goals of your children.
