Betrayal, revenge, failure and forgiveness are some of the many human qualities that make it to the Bard's works.
William Shakespeare needs little, or no, introduction. The Bard of Avon, as he is often known, was born to a leather merchant, John Shakespeare and his wife Mary Arden, and was the third of six children. While there is no confirmation on the English playwright's birth date, he said to have been baptized on April 26, 1564 at the Holy Trinity Church in Stratford-upon-Avon.

Considered the greatest dramatist of all time, Shakespeare's works are as relevant in today's modern, fast-paced, tech-driven world as they were centuries ago.

While betrayal, revenge, failure and forgiveness are some of the many human qualities personified in his works, they don't just make for memorable quotes, but also deliver lessons - both life and business.

So, here's reading between the lines for inspiring lessons to bookmark from the Bard:

"How poor are they that have not patience?"

othello
Kenneth Branagh, Laurence Fishburne, Irène Jacob, and Gabriele Ferzetti in a scene from 'Othello' (1995).

These words, spoken in 'Othello', are a mantra every entrepreneur - new or old - should abide by. A virtue needed at every stage in life, patience is rewarding in more ways than one. So whether you're waiting for that promotion, starting a new business, or trying to close a life-changing deal, the key to success is not to rush things. Something that the Bard reiterated in another classic 'Romeo and Juliet', "Go wisely and go slowly. Those who rush stumble and fall."

"Things won are done; joy's soul lies in the doing." ('Troilus and Cressida')

It's a reminder that while achieving your goal is important, it's often the journey that is the sweetest. The falls and lessons that accompany the climb to the top that will define who you become, and are, once you reach that goal. And it can often be these teachings that help your business thrive.

"We know what we are but know not what we may be."

Kenneth Branagh and Kate Winslet in a scene from 'Hamlet' (1996).

Ophelia's words in 'Hamlet' make one realise how time can change not just things but also people. The only constant that one can work according to is the present, as there is no way of knowing who or what you will be in the future. So, while planning ahead is important, it is also vital to factor in changes in the environment, customers, employees, and even the future-self, that may impact that once-foolproof plan.

And it's also a mantra to remember for those moments of self-doubt, whether during a bad day at work or after a failed job interview. One must know the power that hard-work and perseverance have to change everything.
