Everyday movement matters more than you think for fat loss
Losing fat does not always require strict diets or long hours at the gym. Fitness experts say a large part of daily calorie burn comes from simple movements that people often ignore. These small actions, done consistently through the day, can add up to meaningful fat loss without formal workouts. Fitness coach Priyank Mehta recently explained in an Instagram post how everyday movements play a major role in fat loss.

This concept is known as Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis, or NEAT. It refers to all physical activity that is not planned exercise, sleeping, or eating. According to him, people often focus only on workouts and overlook lifestyle movement, which is where many fat-loss plans fail.

NEAT includes actions such as walking around the house, taking the stairs, cleaning, stretching, standing more often, and even fidgeting. Mehta highlighted that these activities can help burn around 200 to 400 calories every day without adding an extra workout session. He also pointed out that while gym training helps build strength and muscle, daily movement forms the foundation of sustainable fat loss.



How NEAT works in daily life

Medical experts echo this view. According to WebMD, NEAT describes the calories burned during all non-exercise movements throughout the day. Sabrena Jo, senior director of science and education at the American Council on Exercise, explains that even though these activities may not raise the heart rate or cause sweating, they still contribute significantly to overall health.

Basic body functions like breathing, blood circulation, and cell repair already require energy. On top of that, actions such as typing, brushing teeth, laughing, or pacing while thinking also burn calories. Over time, these small efforts add up.

NEAT at work, school, and home

At work or school, NEAT can include taking the stairs instead of the lift, walking during calls, stretching during breaks, or making extra trips to the printer or water cooler. At home, activities such as tidying up, cooking, grocery shopping, playing with pets, gardening, or washing the car all count.

WebMD also notes that people can increase NEAT by standing while folding laundry, walking in place while waiting, dancing between rooms, or doing household tasks by hand instead of using automated options.


NEAT levels can vary widely between individuals. According to research cited by Harvard Medical School, two people of similar size can differ in daily calorie burn by up to 2,000 calories due to lifestyle movement alone. Dr. James Levine from the Mayo Clinic, who has extensively studied NEAT, found that lean individuals tend to stand and walk more during the day, while others sit for longer hours.

Regular movement helps improve metabolism, blood sugar control, cholesterol levels, blood pressure, and heart health. It also reduces the risks linked to prolonged sitting, which has been associated with heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
