Strangers renovate mold-infested home for struggling Massachusetts mother and her three children. (GoFundMe)
Jane Cunningham's house in Sudbury had a damaged roof, dangerous mold and a family room that was left unusable after the ceiling collapsed. The family was already struggling with their health, and the sudden cost of repairs became unaffordable.
How a fundraiser brought help to a struggling family
Jane Cunningham's house had suffered extensive damage which also included water leaks, rotten wood and unwanted animal visitors. The family room's ceiling had caved in bringing down with a large nest of a squirrel. She told WBZ-TV that the damage compelled her to board off the room and stop using it altogether. The property was in desperate need of renovation, but the expense was too much. So, her friend, Melinda Johnson, launched a fundraising campaign on GoFundMe. As per the fundraiser, reported by People, the home urgently needed a new roof, extensive wood repairs to remove the rot caused by water damage.
Construction executive steps in to repair the house
The fundraiser caught the attention of Sudbury resident Dave Fenton, chief operating officer of Suffolk Construction Boston. Moved by Cunningham’s circumstances, Fenton told WBZ that he looked into the situation and realised that his team needed to help immediately. He reached out other professionals in his network like interior specialists and demolition contractor, to get the work done smoothly. The entire team then addressed the mold problem, repaired the drywall, carried out some electrical work and secured the property before the onset of winter. Their efforts helped make the house safer without charging the family for the renovations.
Cunningham described the intervention as life-changing, saying the generosity had transformed her family’s outlook and could change the course of their lives.
Donations to help with roof repairs and medical debt
Although the renovation work was completed free of charge, the family still faced expenses associated with the damaged roof and other household needs. Johnson explained on the GoFundMe page, as reported by People, that the money raised would go towards roof-related repairs. Any additional donations would help cover other home expenses or medical debt that had accumulated. The Economic Times Business News App for the Latest News in Business, Sensex, Stock Market Updates & More.
