It's often all too easy for watch brands to lean on nostalgia and heritage in order to create a story about their products. And that's fine. We like stories too. They give a watch context and character even if the rhetoric is a little spurious at times. But in Breitling's new limited edition Navitimer, the backstory flies, quite literally.

To commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, Breitling has created 75 Navitimer Chronographs featuring the Caliber 01 movement. This is special, not just because it's a noble gesture and an equally gallant watch, but because Breitling's on-board flight chronographs were installed in RAF World War II aircrafts. The company has had an enduring association with the high-altitude heroes since the 1930s. So this commemorative Navitimer is, as a young man might call it, legit.

There is a happy ending to this story too, because not only does the Navitimer endow your wrist with exquisite form and impossibly accurate function, Breit ling is also donating 10 per cent of the sales to the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund, a charity that assists those who have served in battle.
