Big B, Shilpa Shetty greet people on Makar Sankranti, Pongal & Bihu; Smriti Irani feels blessed for India's bountiful harvest

Makar Sankranti is celebrated to mark the new beginning of harvest season.

On the auspicious occasion, several well-known personalities took to social media to greet their fans.
NEW DELHI: With a box full of sweets and a lot of zeal, many celebrated Indian festivals Makar Sankranti, Pongal and Bihu on January 14.

Celebrated each year in January, Makar Sankranti - a festival dedicated to the Sun is observed in Maharashtra, Gujarat, West Bengal and several other states, while the four-day harvest festival ‘Pongal’ is enjoyed in the state of Tamil Nadu. Magh Bihu is celebrated with community feasts in Assam after the annual harvest takes place.

On the auspicious occasion, Union Minister Smriti Irani, and B-town celebrities such as Amitabh Bachchan, Shilpa Shetty, Dia Mirza, among others, took to social media to greet their fans.


In a post on Instagram, Irani on Thursday wished everyone on Bihu, Pongal, Uttarayan and Makar Sankranti. The Textile Minister posted an image of her wearing a Jaapi, a traditional conical hat from Assam.

Feeling proud of the country’s diverse celebrations, the 44-year-old actress-turned-politician said that it’s the time to thank India's bountiful harvest. The minister said that today’s the day we seek blessings for all and pray for good health.

Bachchan, who has around 45 million followers on the micro-blogging site, alongside a picture of him flying a kite, expressed gratitude to his fans for Makar Sankanti wishes.



In a throwback video on Instagram, actress and fitness enthusiast Shetty wrote,: "May all our dreams soar as high as in the sky today." In the short clip, the actress was seen binginges on Laddoos with her sister Shamita Shetty.

Actress Rakul Preet Singh, who recently wrapped up shooting filming for her upcoming film 'MayDay', shared wishes in an image of herself donning a traditional outfit.

'A Wednesday ' actor Anupam Kher, who celebrated the festival in Mumbai with family after a short visit to the hills, shared a map of India on Twitter as he extended his greeting on Makar Sankranti.


'Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein' star took to Twitter to share an image wishing happiness and joy to her fans.
