Will the steady streams of positive reviews give a new lease of life to this desi werewolf flick?
Bhediya’ the supernatural comedy starring Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon, witnessed a huge dip in box-office collections on day four (Monday), despite great WOM ( word-of-the-mouth or audience feedback) and positive reviews from the critics. After minting a decent Rs 11.50 crore on Sunday, the Varun Dhawan starrer collected just Rs 3.85 crore on Monday.

Film critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh, took to Twitter to share the box-office journey of the desi werewolf flick. According to Adarsh, ‘Bhediya’s struggles to remain steady at the box office on Monday were worrying. However, he also predicted that the lack of any new releases till ‘Avatar: The Way Of Water’ may prove to be advantageous for the Amar Kaushik directorial. He wrote, “#Bhediya should’ve performed better on the crucial Mon to cover lost ground… Needs to stay steady on the remaining weekdays… Lack of major opposition [till #Avatar] can prove advantageous… Fri 7.48 cr, Sat 9.57 cr, Sun 11.50 cr, Mon 3.85 cr. Total: Rs 32.40 cr. #India biz.”
As per the statement issued by the producers, ‘Bhediya’ amassed Rs 43.67 crore gross globally in its first weekend. Sanon shared the figure on her Instagram handle and captioned the post, “Howling louder!! Keep the love and howls coming!”
Directed by Amar Kaushik, (of ‘Stree’ fame), ‘Bhediya’ revolves around Bhaskar, a road construction consultant who gets bitten by a wolf when he tries to cut down trees to build roads at a remote locale in Arunachal Pradesh.

Many fans have speculated why the movie has been receiving a lukewarm response at the box office despite decent to great reviews from both the audience as well as the critics. Some feel that the stupendously successful ‘Drishyam 2’ blocked a massive chunk of ‘Bhediya’s audience. The Ajay Devgn-Tabu starrer collected Rs 100 crores in the first week and currently stands at an impressive Rs 143 crores.

Another possibility behind the tepid response to the movie is the fact that the Indian public in general is not very familiar with the concept of werewolves. Unlike ‘Stree’ which was more rooted in local folklore, the myth of the werewolf is mostly a Western cultural import.
