1 It is a popular music style combining blues jams with lyrics declaring fi erce regional pride.

2 Its aggressive, unpretentious sound helped revitalise the American rock scene as well as reviving southern cultural identity in the United States in the 1970s.

3 It developed from rock and roll, country music, and blues, and is focused generally on electric guitar and vocals.



4 Southern rock currently plays on the radio in the United States, but mostly only on classic rock stations. However, there is still a following for older bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd and of course, the Allman Brothers.

5 New age bands such as Nickelback, 3 Doors Down, 12 Stones, Default, Black Stone Cherry and Theory of a Deadman have included a Southern rock feel to their songs and have recorded cover versions of Southern rock classics like ‘Simple Man’ and ‘Tuesday’s Gone’.
