Best to start on our Detox DT programme

Let’s be honest. When Joe Biden is sworn in as president number such and such of the United States, we will feel a lump — not necessarily in our throat, but somewhere else where the seat of feeling morally and intellectually superior resides.

For, with the official departure of Donald Trump, many of us will feel a shallow emptiness, the man being, among many other things, a collective and worthy punching bag deserving our cathartic tirades.

Our Detox DT — Detoxicating Donald Trump — programme will have to start now.


Of course, he will remain in the background, orange being a noticeable colour. But his not being in the spotlight will make it that much harder for us — unable or unwilling to make fun of any other political leader with as much freedom or gusto — to feel good sticking it to the Big Man, any Big Man.

The leaked tape of Trump cajoling, threatening, pressuring Georgia Secretary of State and top election officer Brad Raffensperger on phone to recount the result in that state has the president say ‘…there’s no way I lost Georgia’, and that he just wants ‘to find 11,780 votes’.

Now, where will we find a public figure who makes such entitled and megalomaniacal noises — and whom we can laugh at and gnash our teeth to so openly? There’s no need to answer that. Instead, let’s just start our Detox DT programme in earnest.
