Professionals move to metro cities like Mumbai, Chennai, Delhi and Bengaluru in pursuit of career growth and bigger paychecks. But what they often tend to miss is that higher salaries come with steep living costs, rent, groceries, domestic help and other everyday essentials. We often stumble upon such stories on social media and now, another similar post has grabbed the internet’s attention. Megha, a woman living in Bengaluru, recently shared a post on X, highlighting the high fares of hiring a cook in the city. But she claims that there’s a special reason why she agreed to pay the amount.

Hiring a cook comes with hefty costs

In her post, Megha explained that hiring a cook for two people in Bengaluru can cost around Rs 7,000–8,000 a month, with the domestic help typically visiting twice a day and taking Sundays off.

The Bengaluru woman noted that the routine is fairly straightforward, with the cook arriving, chopping vegetables, preparing two dishes and then heading to the next household.

Pressure cookers dominate Bengaluru home kitchens

Megha also observed that pressure cookers often become the go-to method for cooks in preparing everything from dal and potatoes to soya and chicken.

According to the Bengaluru resident, the food typically tastes average unless homeowners repeatedly explain their preferences. But that often results in the cook using more oil and masala, which can quickly turn meals into an unhealthy option.

Internet reacts to Bengaluru cooks

Yet, despite these limitations, Megha believes that the expense spent on good cooks is worth it. Reason? The monthly amount is less about getting exceptional food and more about avoiding the daily mental burden of planning and cooking 2 meals. The post received multiple reactions from X users.

Bengaluru cook economics are crazy actually. For 2 people, around ₹7–8k/month, 2 visits a day, Sunday off. They come in, chop vegetables , make 2 dishes quickly and move on to the next house.Pressure cooker is basically their Astra , dal, aloo, soya, chicken… everything somehow ends up in it!Taste is usually average unless you keep explaining how you want it. Otherwise more oil + more masala seems to be the shortcut. And yet we continue.Because I realised we’re not really paying ₹8k for amazing food. We’re paying ₹8k to not have to think about cooking twice every single day.
— Megha (@HeyItsMegha) October 7, 2026

‘It’s not easy for sure and surely comes at a cost that sometimes we just have to manage with,’ commented a user. ‘People pay for the freedom from daily kitchen decisions,’ wrote another. Meanwhile, an individual agreed that the meals might not be tasty, but they are definitely healthier compared to food ordered from delivery apps.
