Bindis are a fluid accessory that can be worn with almost every outfit. From traditional sarees and ethnic kurtis to boho-chic attire and modern looks, bindis have evolved over time, becoming a dynamic statement of personal style. But starting a bindi business with Bollywood stars like Kareena Kapoor, Kajol, Sonam Kapoor and Tamannaah Bhatia as your customers? Might sound like a distant dream, but Bengaluru’s Meghna Khanna has made it possible with her startup, The Bindi Project.

Bengaluru woman quit corporate job for startup

Before her entrepreneurial journey, Meghna Khanna pursued her MBA in marketing and finance from Pune, before entering the corporate world at a qualitative market research firm in 2001, as per Startup Pedia. But within 1 year, she quit, bitten by the bug of wanting to start something of her own.

Meghna launched her handcrafted jewellery brand Levitate in 2002, but she had to shut the shop in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 2 years later, a candid conversation with a friend about her grandmother’s bindi gave Meghna the idea to start her bindoi business.

So, in December 2022, Meghna launched The Bindi Project, specialising in handcrafted, funky and statement bindis in an array of shapes, sizes, colours and patterns which instantly drew attention. The initial investment was Rs 5 lakhs. Cut to 2025, the brand serves over 1500 customers with an annual revenue of Rs 20 lakhs, reported Startup Pedia. Several Bollywood celebrities have worn Meghna’s bindis and have flaunted them on social media.

As per Meghna, the simple accessory thrives on creativity, expression, and culture and every bindi she creates carries these elements through and through. The brand experiments with numerous collections, including festive, leather, textile, and contemporary designs, even spanning heritage and culture-rich offerings like Amaani, Durga, Kalyani, Kali, Poulomi, Ruhaani, and Kamakhya.
