While speaking with Sharma, Surya shared details about his professional and financial background. He said he has been living in Bengaluru for the past 14 years and is employed as a software consultant. According to him, his annual compensation stands at ₹45 lakh, while his monthly in-hand salary comes to approximately ₹2.45 lakh.
Explaining how his income is allocated, Surya revealed that the largest monthly expense is the EMI on his home loan. He pays ₹63,000 every month towards the loan repayment. Mutual fund advisor Anshuman Sharma observed that the amount was within a healthy range, noting that it accounts for less than 30 percent of Surya's monthly earnings.
A closer look at his household budget showed that he spends ₹11,000 each month on his son's school fees. His monthly grocery and food expenses total around ₹12,000, while another ₹20,000 is set aside for various day-to-day and miscellaneous costs.
Beyond essential expenses, Surya estimated that he spends nearly ₹32,000 every month on discretionary activities, including shopping, vacations, and dining at restaurants. This particular portion of his spending pattern quickly became the focal point of online discussions, with many people debating whether the amount was reasonable or excessive.
“Right now the challenge that I’m facing is that at the end of the month, I don't know where my money is going. I usually don't have anything left at the end of the month,” he said.
