BENGALURU: City-based filmmaker Vicky Patil, 39, wanted a dedicated entertainment space in his first home on Lavelle Road he bought a year ago. In the two-bedroom apartment, he designed a dim-lit lounge bedecked with an Indonesian poker table, chesterfield sofa, bar trolleys and 360-degree stone wallpaper. He converted the balcony into his “den”. “I was inspired by the non-traditional offices of startups,” says Patil. “With the ambience of a whiskey-cigar lounge and private music, my friends and I have stopped stepping out to party as that comes with restrictions like deadlines, live music ban and drunken-driving concerns.”
Bengaluru’s home owners are redefining home entertainment — they are now incorporating a restobar lookalike at home. Baker Afshan Rubb Oskam, 37, hosts at least two parties every month and has upgraded the terrace of her penthouse on Cookson Road into a rooftop bar. Besides installing a lawn with a tech-savvy sound system, she has added a six-seater fine-dine table among other accessories.
“While guests enjoy the peace of being at home, the design of the entertainment space gives them the feeling of being at a restaurant,” says Oskam.
Representative image. Angel investor Purnima Bellur, 43, who shuttles between Qatar and Bengaluru, prefers to host her high-profile friends at home. The entertainment space, apparently, was prioritised and went first on the blueprint for her Indiranagar home. The terrace lounge has a projector screen, a bar with a wine fridge and a mixing counter, king chairs and collapsible sound-proof doors. “It’s a playground for the big kids,” says Bellur. “Living rooms are taking on a formal hue where you display your prized possessions like paintings and artefacts. You cannot put your feet up, unwind or socialise. Designated entertainment space is, thus, mandatory.”
Interior experts note the growing trend. Deena Rodrigues, owner of furniture store Chairs & Company, says, “Even a small lounge is welcome. So, a bedroom is converted into a mini restobar.”

Anshul Chodha, principal architect at Sanctuary Architects and Designers, says that the average spend for an entertainment space ranges from Rs 50 lakh to Rs 1 crore. “People, especially over the age of 40, want privacy and exclusivity for their guests now. They add snooker tables, mini discotheque, and barbecue grill to soundproof luxe spaces,” says Chodha.
