A new supernatural thriller series has begun to stream online. Below is a Canadian thriller ser in an isolated coastal community created by Jesse McKeown, known for The Umbrella Academy. The series features Josh Hartnett, Mackenzie Davis and Charlie Heaton. The story centres around a mysterious force which threatens a coastal town and its residents, blending supernatural suspense with a story about survival, belonging and family.

What is Below about?

Set in a close-knit seaside community, Below follows fisherman Calvin Penney, played by Josh Hartnett, as he tries to uncover a mysterious force wreaking havoc in the waters surrounding his home. According to Tudum, Netflix’s official editorial platform, Calvin has long believed he is cursed after a childhood tragedy changed the course of his life. The fisherman and father of three struggles to find success in his village while an unknown creature begins threatening the locals. At the same time, the community faces another major crisis. A vote is approaching that will decide whether residents accept a buyout in exchange for leaving their land.

For the lead character, Calvin, the fight is not just about facing the mysterious presence beneath the sea, but also protecting his family, the community and his town.

Jesse McKeown reveals the inspiration behind Below

The series draws inspiration from Newfoundland, the rugged Canadian province where it was filmed. Creator Jesse McKeown told Tudum that the region’s striking landscape and isolated setting made it an ideal backdrop for a supernatural story. “I always felt like this would be a great place for something big and epic,” McKeown said, describing the area as a “unique landscape” that can feel dangerous, isolated and frightening. However, the creator also wanted to capture the warmth of the people who live there. He pointed out that the region has another side, with a community that is welcoming and residents who are “funny and unique”.

This contrast between an intimidating natural environment and the close bonds shared by its residents forms an important part of the series’ setting.

What Josh Hartnett said about playing Calvin Penney

Hartnett’s character is a troubled fisherman who has spent much of his life believing that he is unlucky. Despite his gruff exterior, Calvin remains deeply committed to his family and the future of his town. Speaking to Tudum, Hartnett described his character as someone who is “100% there for his family” and equally determined to stand up for what he believes is right for his community.

To prepare for the role, the actor immersed himself in Newfoundland’s culture and history. He also spent time getting to know local residents and listening to their stories to understand the place and its people. McKeown praised Hartnett’s commitment to the part, revealing that the actor was enthusiastic about the project from the beginning. “He was so into it right away,” the creator told Tudum, adding that Hartnett immediately began researching Newfoundland and became fascinated by the region. He also wanted to portray its people and culture accurately.

Hartnett, known for films including Pearl Harbor and Oppenheimer, has also appeared in the recently released Verity.
